2018-07-02

Some people have ambitious dreams and keep pursuing them, but other people always focus on realistic goals and try to achieve them. Which do you think is better? Why?

Surviving within the society is never easy, so does pursuing one’s dream. Despite the harsh realities, I believe that chasing dreams is much more important than merely going along with the crowd. After all, everyone needs ambition to guide themselves, and the process of following your ambition can be very fulfilling.

Ambition can prevent individuals from getting lost, no matter how unrealistic or how difficult it can be. For instance, an influential Chinese entrepreneur named Jianlin Wang has said“let’s start with a small goal of making 100 million dollars”. From a realistic point of view, the “small goal” seems absurd for everyday people. However, optimists know that setting a goal will eventually guide you closer and close to success. Therefore, I believe that having an ambitious dream is necessary as it can guide you to your ultimate goal, and it does not matter if you are actually going to achieve it or not.

On the other hand, the realities could contradict one’s ambition. To give an example, when an individual dreams of becoming an actor, he may have realistic considerations such as supporting his everyday spending or his family members. Under such circumstances, perhaps he will have to forfeit the idea of entering a film school to pursue his ambition. It is not difficult to realize that in certain cases, people are forced to focus on reality, thus chasing one’s dream is not an option at all.

However, in most cases, the so called “realistic goals”is controversial in nature. For example, in today’s China, young people are willing to work twelve hours a day for “realistic” gains such as an apartment and a car. Although these two items are often considered a “necessity”, theirabsence would not lead to life-threatening conditions, unlike water or food. The truth is, when people tie their value toward such materialistic gains, they begin to lose themselves. Therefore, they are not focusing on realistic goals, but instead following an alternative ambition which alters their true personality.

Although there are extreme cases where pursuing immediate goals are absolutely necessary, it is often rare and circumstantial. In general, following your dream is more important than pursuing such perceivedrealistic goals, as it will prevent you from getting lost or altering your true identity. In such materialistic world we live in today, people become more and more ambitious about material products, and this processblurred the line between ambition and reality, which is worrying.
